Findings in Jeremiah

A fascinating discovery in Jeremiah 1:11! Reading the text in parallel (in Romanian and English), I noticed a striking difference: while the Romanian version says “Văd un veghetor” (a watchman), the English version translates “I see a rod of an almond tree”. Sounds completely different, doesn’t it?

Well, studying the original, I discovered a brilliant play on words in Hebrew! The word for almond is shaken (שָׁקֵד), derived directly from the verb shakad (שָׁקַד), which means “to watch”, “to be alert” or “to wake up”. The almond tree is literally called the “awake tree” or “the watchman” because it is the first to wake up from its winter sleep, blooming as early as January. Thus, when God asks Jeremiah what he sees, the almond branch becomes the perfect symbol for the next verse (1:12): God Himself is watching (shoked) to fulfill His urgent word.

Now, think about all the other mentions of almonds in the Bible (from Aaron’s rod that blossomed, to the bowls of the lampstand in the Tabernacle) they all take on a whole new meaning for me, full of life and divine watchfulness!
